Beyond Barton Creek: 5 of My Favorite Hiking Spots South of the River in Austin

Let's take a break from real estate for a minute.

If you're looking to spend more time outdoors, South Austin has no shortage of incredible trails and green spaces. And while Barton Creek Greenbelt is a classic for a reason, it's also the first place everyone mentions.

So here are five of my favorite hiking spots south of the river that deserve just as much attention.

1. McKinney Falls State Park

If I had to pick just one, this would be it.

Unlike a quick neighborhood trail, McKinney Falls is more of a destination. The $6 day-use fee is well worth it if you're planning to spend a few hours exploring.

You'll find scenic hiking trails, swimming holes, waterfalls, and plenty of space to unwind. Visit during the fall, and you might even catch some of Austin's best seasonal colors—something we don't always get to enjoy here in Central Texas.

2. Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metro Park

Roy G. offers a little bit of everything.

The park features several trails winding through wooded areas and open spaces, making it easy to tailor your hike to the amount of time you have. If it's your first visit, don't miss Secret Beach—a hidden local favorite along the Colorado River.

One tip: stay aware of the disc golf course. The regulars take their game seriously, so keep an eye out for flying discs.

3. Mary Moore Searight Metropolitan Park

Another South Austin favorite, Mary Moore Searight has enough trail variety that every visit can feel a little different.

With multiple trailheads and intersecting paths, you can easily explore new routes each time you go. The park also has creeks and small water crossings, though I'd personally stick to hiking rather than swimming.

Just like Roy G., you'll want to stay alert around the disc golf areas.

4. Slaughter Creek at Circle C

If you're looking for peaceful trails with beautiful Hill Country scenery, Slaughter Creek and the Circle C trail system are hard to beat.

Depending on which side of MoPac you start from, you'll experience different sections of the trail network, making it fun to return and explore new routes.

One thing to remember: these trails are popular with mountain bikers, so stay aware and share the trail responsibly.

5. Bauerle Ranch Park

Bauerle Ranch may be the smallest trail system on this list, but it's one of the most relaxing.

It's perfect for an hour-long hike, a morning walk, or getting outside with your dog. Even though parts of the trail run alongside nearby neighborhoods, the tree cover and natural surroundings make it feel surprisingly secluded.

It's an easy escape without having to leave the city.

Get Outside and Explore

Austin has plenty of amazing outdoor spaces beyond the well-known Barton Creek Greenbelt. Whether you're looking for waterfalls, wooded trails, hidden beaches, or a peaceful place to walk the dog, these South Austin spots each offer something unique.

Now I'd love to hear from you.

Which hiking trail or greenbelt south of the river is your favorite? Did I leave one off the list that deserves a spot? Let me know—I'm always looking for my next adventure.
