How Austin Pets Alive! Helped Transform Animal Rescue in Austin

Austin has become known as one of the largest No Kill cities in the country — and a big reason why is the incredible work of Austin Pets Alive!. What started as a local advocacy effort has grown into a nationally recognized organization dedicated to saving the lives of vulnerable pets and creating innovative programs that help animals get the second chances they deserve.

When Austin Pets Alive! was first imagined, Austin’s shelter kill rate was around 87%. Through years of dedication, collaboration, and lifesaving programs, the city now has an estimated 97% save rate. Their work has not only changed outcomes for pets locally, but has also helped influence animal rescue efforts across the country.

Since officially opening in 2008, APA! has helped save more than 140,000 pets. The organization is known for pioneering programs designed specifically for animals most at risk of euthanasia, including Parvo Puppy ICUs, Bottle Baby Kitten Nurseries, and groundbreaking feline leukemia and FIP research. These programs continue to push lifesaving innovation forward while giving thousands of animals the opportunity to heal, recover, and find loving homes.

Beyond adoption services, APA! also focuses on keeping pets and families together whenever possible. Through foster programs, medical support, behavioral resources, and community outreach initiatives, the organization helps pet owners navigate challenges that might otherwise lead to surrendering their animals. Their mission is centered around providing the education, resources, and support needed to eliminate the unnecessary killing of companion animals.

This May, Austin Pets Alive! is celebrating National Pet Month through the Give Love. Save Lives. campaign in partnership with Walmart and Best Friends Animal Society. Community members can participate through adoptions, fostering, donations, volunteering, and sharing awareness to help even more pets find safety and loving homes.

The event will take place on May 16, 2026, from 9am–1pm at 710 E Ben White Blvd in Austin, Texas. It’s an opportunity for the community to come together and support a mission that continues to make a lasting impact on both pets and people.

For those looking to support the organization further, donations can be made directly through their website at Austin Pets Alive! Donation Page. Every contribution helps provide food, shelter, medical care, and lifesaving support for animals in need.

At Pinnacle Property Group, we love highlighting organizations that make Austin a stronger and more compassionate community. Austin Pets Alive! is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people come together around a mission that truly changes lives.
