My Top 5 Austin Municipal Golf Courses
Normally, I use this space to share real estate tips and Austin housing insights. But this week, we're switching things up.
If you've spent any time with me, you already know I enjoy getting out on the golf course whenever I can. Austin has no shortage of great places to play, especially when it comes to municipal courses that offer incredible value, beautiful scenery, and layouts that keep you coming back.
So here are my personal rankings of Austin's municipal golf courses.
1. Morris Williams Golf Course (Mo Willy)
For me, this one takes the top spot—and honestly, it isn't even that close.
"Morris Williams," or "Mo Willy" as my golf group calls it, has everything I look for in a course. The skyline views are some of the best you'll find anywhere in Austin, the rolling hills make every hole interesting, and while the fairways are generally forgiving, there are still plenty of holes that will punish a poor shot.
It's the kind of course that rewards good golf without making every round feel impossible. If you've never played it, it's at the top of my recommendation list.
2. Lions Municipal Golf Course
Lions comes in at number two.
The location alone makes it special. Nestled near Westlake Hills, it offers a classic Austin golf experience with wide-open fairways and beautiful scenery throughout the round.
One of the things I appreciate most about Lions is that you're spending more time playing golf and less time searching for golf balls in the trees.
And if you're doing the day right, you wrap up your round and head over to Deep Eddy for a well-earned drink.
3. Riverside Golf Course
I know technically Riverside isn't a municipal course anymore, but there's no way I could leave it off this list.
Riverside has that old Austin golf feel that's getting harder to find. The open layout, fun par threes, and skyline views make it one of the most enjoyable rounds in the city.
Even better? Baby A's is just down the road, making it the perfect place to celebrate (or recover from) your score with one of their famous purple margaritas.
4 & 5. Jimmy Clay and Roy Kizer
These neighboring courses round out my top five.
Jimmy Clay is generally the more affordable and forgiving option, making it great for golfers of all skill levels.
Roy Kizer offers a little more challenge, with several holes that demand solid course management and will definitely humble you if you're not careful.
Both courses are surrounded by the beautiful greenbelt and McKinney Falls area, providing a peaceful setting that feels removed from the city's hustle. They're excellent choices when you're looking for a quality round without getting completely worn out by the course.
So... What's Your Top Three?
Every golfer has their favorites, and I'm sure this list will spark a few debates.
What's your top three Austin golf courses?
And if Morris Williams isn't on your list...
I have a feeling we'll be arguing about it in the comments.
